DESIGN TUES // PUT THE LIGHTS ON THE TREE

December 12, 2017 Tammy Matute

New Sactown apartment means a new holiday decor entry. The last time I did this was in our Glendale home back in 2015. I realize now, I tend to post at the end of the year rather than throughout the year like how one should blog. But my motto has always been, "better late than never" and you know me, livin' that procrastinator lifestyle. Now on to the (semi) annual eye candy!

You guys, this tree has been a part of our household since we first moved in together five years ago. I want to say it was a thirty-dollar artificial tree from Target, it might have even been less than that, nevertheless, I'm pretty sure we got our moneys worth three years go. When we first got it, we only had Target ornaments and they just covered the front side of the tree, barely. Look now at our grown up baby with all its lovely friends hanging on to their dear lives. I'll point out a few of my favorite ornaments further down in the post.

In the new place, we made the bookcase more of a display case, and I cleared out a cubby to put in my huge ass Christmas nesting dolls that I wish could stay up all year round. Atop the book case we put our "NOEL" iron signage and adorned it with fairy lights. We had so many left over from the wedding, why not put it everywhere for the holidays! Like, I'm considering putting some fairy lights on top of the toilet; we have that many (doubles as a night light for those pesky 2am pee sessions).

Now back to the main attraction of any home during Christmastime, the tree, ya nerd! I'm still very much in love with my mint green origami star tree topper. I remember being apprehensive to get it because it doesn't light up. I don't know about your tree, but I love looking at mine just as much in the daytime as in the night. For me, hoarding ornaments is like collecting figurines, but more depressing because I only get to take them out once a year and they are displayed for only about a month. When I do take them out, it's like seeing a long lost friend, and you have to apologize profusely for not keeping in touch. It's also exciting adding new buddies to the mix. This year, my dearest cousin made me custom ornaments with beautiful gold lettering, and they fit in so well with my "pops of color" theme, as if they always belonged in my tree.

The little, pink elf will always have a special place in my heart and in my tree. She's so adorable. The sloth ornament is a new addition and an instant favorite. I see a lot of myself in that sloth. The light purple-dashed triceratops is also a fairly recent crew member and he is as fierce as my other absolute loves beneath him, the sequin reindeer and the rainbow tiger. They all contribute to my everyday happiness whenever I take a break from the daily grind to admire its beauty.

We have a proper dining room (more like nook), so we dressed it up with more fairy lights, our wooden village with my growing collection of pastel-hued mini bottle brush trees, ceramic reindeer, and those whimsical pom pom stockings! Oh, I have been searching for the quintessential "Tammy" Christmas stockings, and when my eyeballs narrowed in at those beauties from Anthropologie, I gasped so loud, it sounded like my last breath on Mother Earth. Mostly because I was shocked they were under $100, but more so because they looked like they were made for me. You always gravitate towards objects that look like they were created just for you.

That's all, folks! Before I sign off (and who knows when I'll return? I don't, clearly...), I just wanted to point out that I've always wanted to own a macramé wall hanging, but until I can figure out how to make my own, I did get a little macramé ornament from local artist The Northern Needle.

Merry everything to you!

🥰 Catching up with old friends always good for the soul, especially over @fob_kitchen ’s delicious Filipino food. We really gotta figure out how to make that pandan iced coffee, I miss it already.

My favorite boy to photograph (besides my Linus 🐶), lots of people are tagging #forevervalentine but he’s been my #onlyvalentine. And since it’s also #tbt, how ‘bout a throwback to our second Valentine’s (2010) spent in the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Wish I could tell our younger selves that Disneyland would never be that chill again. 😫
😭 I have the best work partner/sister in law/older sis figure. I say it often to myself, but in case I don’t say it enough to you, @darlingvader, here it is... “You DA besssst.” ✨ The Pruitt clan sure know that I have a soft spot for @milkjarcookies and anything that reminds me of LA in general. Anyways, love ya girl, always missing you, but see you next month! Best Galentine’s ever! 👩‍❤️‍👩
🎣 this kid, always in my shots.
A cozy Super Bowl Sunday.
This past Sunday I attended the #wipbrunch and the energy in that room was electric. ⚡️ For a long, long time, society was trying to pit women against each other, or keep us in their own private spheres, but here we all were, proof that we hold our own power, and when together, we lift each other up and become unstoppable. So grateful for being able to witness such encouragement and inspired to keep going, to be better, and to remind myself that I’m not alone.

A reminder that the holiday season is about spending time with the people you love. Let go of expectations, live in the moment, cherish that time spent together, and appreciate the people you’ve chosen to surround yourself with. Wishing everyone a lovely celebration however you choose you do it. 🥳

If someone were to ask me where my happy place is, I think I would admit it is @smorgasburgla. Joshua and I used to go every Sunday when we lived down south, so we try to make it out there whenever we are in town. Stuffing our bellies family-style, then walking around taking pics in front of the murals, window shopping (the shops at @rowdtla are crazy expensive—I ain’t got that kind of money!), watching your old and new pals become pals, all this, it just warms a girl’s heart 💛

It may be fall season, but in LA it’s endless summer. ☀️ Heading down there today, and really hoping to be able to snag a slice of crack pie from #milkbarla 🤞🏽
